The relentless pressure on Southgate to shoehorn Phil Foden into left wing ended up as a total disaster against Serbia.
That match produced less xG than in ANY Premier League game last season.
There was zero coherence, zero creativity and zero urgency.
And it’s not Phil’s fault.
He is a disgustingly good footballer, playing for a Man City team that is being slowly built around his finishing talents and bursts of magic.
But he’s not a left winger.
